1922 – 2017
Mrs. Ethel Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bateman, age 94, passed away on September, 26, 2017 at Sunset Manor in Innisfail, Alberta. Betty was born December 28, 1922 in Innisfail, Alberta, the daughter of William and Ethel Morison.
Betty enjoyed athletics and during her school years, participated in track and field events – particularly running. She won many awards and ribbons during this time. Her love of sports continued throughout her life – bowling and horseshoes. Betty learned to play horseshoes with her father at an early age and won many tournaments in her adult years. She was also a fan of the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos. During her school years, she was also involved with the Calf Club and one year won Grand Champion with her steer Romeo.
On March 1, 1947 she married Allen Ernest Bateman and they resided in the Big Bend area west of Innisfail. In addition to raising their four children Betty volunteered at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104 for many years. She was a member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, the Pythian Sisters and Co-operative Women’s Guild. Betty was also the secretary for the Innisfail Co-op Board and for the Innisfail Seed Cleaning Plant. She was always happy to have her family visit and loved playing games with her grandchildren. Betty moved from her acreage to Innisfail in 2005, then to Sunset Manor in 2015. She resided there until her passing.
Betty is survived by her daughters Shirley (Dave) Adams Carol (Don) Curtice and Joy (Stan) Marshall; six grandchildren, Tanya Gold (Mike Ngyun), Ryan Marshall (Michelle), Kyle Marshall, Lyndsey Bridge (Nathan), Diane Bachelder (Brian), Darlene Adams; six great grandchildren, Sydney Gold, Wilder Bridge, Andrew Martin (Kelly), Christopher Martin, Colin Bachelder, Amy Bachelder; and one great granddaughter Kaidence Martin; her sister, Bert Popovich; brother, Alan Morison; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Allen; son, Thom; brothers, George, William, John, Gordon, Colin, and Ronald; and sisters, Charlotte and Peggy.
A Memorial service will be held for the late Betty Bateman at Heartland Funeral Services Chapel, Innisfail, Alberta on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. A family graveside will be held in the Field of Honor at the Innisfail Cemetery . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Sunset Manor Recreation Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
