Obituary for Elizabeth Molendyk
Elizabeth was born in Emmen, Holland, on November 17, 1922, to Pieter and Berentje
Niemeyer, and was the oldest of 10 children. She started work early, and at 15 years old she
was helping with the laundry, and then worked in Emmen at 18 as a housekeeper for the Bakery
owners for one year. This was followed by farm work, waitressing, and factory work until she
emigrated to Canada in 1951, aged 29. She continued working as housekeeper and nanny in
Montreal and Ottawa, then moved to Toronto and worked in a venetian blind factory.
Elizabeth had a boyfriend in Emmen, but he was taken to Germany during the war with all the
other young men, to work in the war factories. He tried to see her after she moved to Borne in
Holland, but she found a letter in his pocket with another girl’s name in it, so that finished the
relationship.
In 1972 while working in her brother Elzo’s store she met Bill Molendyk, and they were married
in 1973. For 36 happy years they lived in Ontario and Fernie, BC, moving to Olds, AB, in 2000
where they were able to connect with Elizabeth’s sister, Anna Williams. As they had no children,
Anna was Elizabeth’s friend and support, particularly after Bill died, spending more time with her
as she got older. She was remarkably well until the last 2 1/2 months, and Anna spent most of
the last 11 days with her in Olds hospital, until she was received by Jesus as His child, on
Wednesday, November 7, just short of her 96th birthday. During those 11 days she made it
clear that she was ready to go to heaven and to be with her Lord.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Bill Molendyk, and her parents, Pieter and Berentje
Niemeyer; also by brothers Johannis, John, Elzo and Harm Niemeyer, and sister Yvonne De
Bruin. She is survived by sisters Sonya Mulder, Coby De Bruin, Anna Williams, brother Bronno
Niemeyer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
