Obituary for Mary Clara Milaney

MILANEY
Mary Milaney (nee Schneider) passed away peacefully at the Olds Hospice after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 98 years. She was born in Vibank, Saskatchewan to Anton and Clara Schneider and was the third of four children; Wendell, Ludy and Kelly. They lived for four years in Vibank where they owned a general store and then moved to Regina. Since her parents did not like city life, they travelled to Beaverdam by boxcar; animals in one half, the family in the other half. Buildings were built on the homestead for the family and animals. Marys’ dad gathered the families of Beaverdam and together they built a one room schoolhouse from the surrounding evergreens. Mary’s younger brother, Kelly was hired as janitor for $7/mth. Entertainment consisted of dances at the school once a month and in the winter, skating on the rink that Anton and his sons had made. The four children shared two pairs of skates. Fergus Milaney had come to teach in the school at Beaverdam. When Fergus proposed to Mary, she forgot about her plans to become a nurse. On September 3, 1938 Mary and Fergus were married in a double wedding ceremony with Mary’s sister Ludy and Fergus’ brother Gerry. That summer Fergus went to summer school and then taught school in Beaver Crossing. They rented a house for $5/mth. Eventually they bought the house for $150. Louise, the oldest, was born in 1940 and Wayne in 1943 both in Cold Lake. After 5 years in Beaver Crossing, the family moved to Legoff. Fergus taught a year here then was offered a job teaching High School in Heisler, AB where the family was provided with a beautiful two-story home. In 1946, Daniel was born in Daysland and Theresa 1949 in Camrose. In 1949, the family moved to Roundhead Creek, four miles from Heisler where Fergus was the principal. In 1951, Celine was born in Killam. The family moved back to Heisler until 1958 when they relocated to Bowness, with the exception of Louise who married Victor Ploc that summer. Fergus continued to hold the principal position at the high school. Mary continued to live in Bowness after Fergus passed in 1976 and offered boarding to university students many of whom were her grandchildren. She eventually moved to Grimshaw, back to Calgary and finally to Olds where Wayne became her faithful caregiver.
