Obituary for Dorothy Lenora Smith

SMITH – WHARTON (nee TILBE)
Dorothy Lenora
January 5, 1935 – July 5, 2018
It is with great sadness, that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother Dorothy Lenora Smith, on Thursday, July 5, 2018 in the Red Deer Regional Hospital at 83 years of age. Her mind was still razor sharp but her body was sick and decided it was time to go home to be with her first husband, Patrick John Wharton; parents, Ron and Lillian Tilbe; youngest brother, Leonard Francis Tilbe and second husband, Art Smith. Dorothy was born January 5, 1935 in Macleod, Alberta. She married Patrick Wharton, June 1st, 1954 in the Macleod Presbyterian Church. They raised their family of five children, in Macleod until moving to Sundre, Alberta in 1992. She chose to remain in Sundre after Pat’s passing on August 29, 1994. Dorothy had a beautiful singing voice, which she shared as a member of the Macleod Presbyterian Church choir and “crooning” to her “fussy” grandbabies. Pat and Dorothy were active members of the Macleod Elks and Royal Purple. Together, they enjoyed camping, travelling, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Dorothy loved to golf at the Macleod and Sundre Golf Courses and was a passionate fan of curling, Flames’ hockey games, Stampeders’ football and Tiger Woods golfing. (You didn’t dare call and interrupt the game!) Widow, Dorothy, married Widower, Art Smith on October 28, 1995. They continued to reside in Sundre and enjoyed curling, golfing, travelling and working at the Sundre Legion until Art’s health declined and he passed away October 14, 2009. Dorothy found a new lease on life in August 2014 when she moved to the Sundre Pioneer Place. With her fellow residents, she enjoyed countless hours of playing cards, searching for puzzle pieces collecting dolls, watching movies and pot luck suppers. (She took her phone with her, so she wouldn’t miss a call!) The Sundre Royal Purple Society #191 recently awarded Dorothy with her 60-year pin. It recognized her previous service as District Deputy for District 16, which included lodges from Stavely, AB; Crowsnest Pass, AB; Pincher Creek, AB; Fort Macleod, AB; and Kimberly, B.C. She also served as Honored Royal Lady for the Fort Macleod Lodge #28. Dorothy was proud to be a long time Legion member; joining when she still resided in Fort Macleod. Dorothy is lovingly remembered and survived by daughter Cathy (Roy) Steinhauer of Okotoks, AB; son Jack (Kathy) Wharton of Airdrie, AB; daughter Linda (Doug) Adams of Sundre, AB; daughter Maureen Wharton of Calgary, AB and youngest son Jim (Lucy) Wharton of Calgary, AB; brother Jim (Sharon) Tilbe of Calgary, AB; sister-in-law, Janet Tilbe of Fort Macleod, AB; 12 grandchildren and their 8 spouses; “GG” to 13 great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by Art’s children, daughter Nicola Smith; son, Mark (Diane) Smith both of Sundre; 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to the Sundre First Responders; Nurses and Doctors of the Sundre Hospital and Care Centre, who went above and beyond caring for Dorothy when distance negated immediate family members’ prompt attendance. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the ICU staff at the Red Deer Regional Hospital for their amazing care and compassion during our mother’s last hours. At Dorothy’s request, a private family memorial is planned for a later date. If so desired, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Sundre Hospital and Care Centre; Bag 3, 709 1 St. NE, Sundre, AB. T0M 1X0 and directed to “greatest need” or an alternate service of your choice are greatly appreciated.
