HARRY GILES
1921 - 2018

Mr. Harry G. Giles, passed away peacefully at Extendicare Michener Hill, Assisted Living Centre, Red Deer, AB., on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the age of 97 years.
Harry was born on January 14, 1921 in the Municipality of Souris-Glenwood, MB, and was raised in the rural area of Carroll, MB. Harry enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in December 1941, at the age of 20 years. His active duty rank of Sergeant took him across Canada, east to west, where he made many friends along the way. He was discharged from Royal Canadian Army in November 1945 so he could return to civil life. On January 20, 2015, at the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #104, Harry was honored to attend a celebration hosted by MP Earl Dreeshen to receive a commemorative lapel pin and certificate of recognition in honour of the extraordinary role he and other Canadian Veterans of the Second World War played in achieving Allied victory. Harry was very proud to serve his country. When Harry was stationed in Red Deer he met Mildred Martin, a Red Deerian, at a local dance. They were married May 24, 1943 at the Ridgewood Church, in the Ridgewood District west of Red Deer and for the next sixty two years they enjoyed many adventures while living in the various communities of: Carroll and Brandon, MB, Red Deer and Spirit River AB. In 1964, Harry and Mildred decided to move from Brandon, MB to Red Deer, AB. Harry worked at various jobs as a laborer. Harry was known to be a hard worker at any job he did and was respected for this. He gained considerable knowledge in Fire Extinguisher service and Janitorial Supplies when working for Douglas Supplies and then Kleen Ltd... In 1974 Harry and Mildred opened H & A Supplies Ltd., a Fire Extinguisher service and Janitorial Supplies Store. They were very proud of their company, and customer service was their priority. Harry made several business contacts and he was an active member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer from 1975 to 1978. They sold their business in November 1978. On December 1, 1978, Harry and Mildred moved from Red Deer to a farm west and north of Spirit River, AB. They enjoyed the farm life, and had made many friends around their rural area. Over the next 27 years they raised cattle and chickens for a few years and continued to have good crops each year. They moved back to central Alberta and settled in Innisfail in 2005. Mildred passed away November 29, 2005. Harry had a dry sense of humor, which caught many people by surprise. He enjoyed playing a light hearted joke on someone now and then too. Harry enjoyed meeting people and would easily strike up a conversation wherever he was, whether it was at the grocery store or local bank. Harry, our father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather will be deeply missed by his family now and forever. Harry leaves to mourn his loss, his children; George (Jackie) Giles of Fairview, AB., Janet Giles of Surrey, BC, and Julia (John) King of Penhold, AB., six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sisters Helen Dewores of Estherhazy, SK., and Eva Howard of Brandon, MB, his sister in laws; Doris Giles of Leduc, AB and Irene Gowsell of Red Deer, AB., as well as numerous other family members and many dear friends. Harry was predeceased by his wife Mildred Giles, his parents George and Bertha Giles, his sister Annie Robinson, his brother Bert Giles and daughter in law Elaine Giles.
