Obituary for Kenneth Ernest "Ken" Crouch

16 October 1940 - 13 March 2018
Kenneth was born with his twin sister Ruth at the Olds Hospital to Bud and Edna Crouch on the 16th of October 1940. Bud and Edna took the twins back to their homestead west of Sundre to join their big sister, Josephine. Kenneth lived on or near the home place for most of his life unless work took him to other parts of Alberta. Ken grew up during the transition from horse powered equipment to machine powered equipment. He was unique in that he was both a natural and excellent horseman as well an exceptional equipment operator. Both were important to him until the end. He loved his horses and his machinery...especially John Deere tractors. Ken operated equipment from early in his life as he and his Dad had dozers for logging and clearing land. Logging was the key industry when Ken started working as a young man working for the Eskesen Brothers and the Mjolsness Brothers on their Williams Creek operations. Ken also loved to work with his good friend Glen Kilgour who was a guide and outfitter in the Wilmore Wilderness Park area. There, Ken's passion for hunting Big Horn sheep guided many a hunter to his trophy. He harvested his last ram when he was 65. Ken's exceptional work ethic, honesty and integrity along with his attention to detail and perfectionism resulted in him rising to the top in all of his endeavours. He quickly became a foreman and spread boss for pipeline companies like Wonderly and Kershaw, Resolute Construction and Petroline Construction. Though pipelining was very lucrative, his other love was farming and raising cattle. He returned to this endeavour excelling as an astute cowman. Ken often said there should be enough money in agriculture that you didn't have to work out to subsidize it. However he, started up a successful contracting company with a small cat, a track hoe and gravel truck. He worked in the area for many, many people, digging basements, installing septic tanks, landscaping, transplanting trees, building road accesses and hauling tons of gravel. He also contracted to out to his son Mark Crouch doing various cat jobs in the oil patch. Throughout his life and work, Ken continually built new friendships. His favorite place for breakfast and afternoon coffee was the A&W where he enjoyed the banter with his A&W colleagues. Ken is survived and will be very sadly missed by his children, Mark (Connie), Steven(Karen), Shawn(Holly); grandchildren Rachel, Delaney,Troy Alexa(Troy),Erica; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Josephine Kearney; twin sister Ruth (Jack Davidson) and his soul mate and partner, Liz Negropontes.
