Obituary for John Alvin Gorrill

GORRILL
John Alvin Gorrill was born December 5, 1918 at Ponteix, Saskatchewan to Garfield and Eliza Gorrill. He was the 5th of 6 sons. Alvin received his schooling in rural southern Saskatchewan. The family decided to move to the Creston Valley area in British Columbia in 1936 still keeping the two farms near Ponteix and Aneroid. Alvin and his father along with the help of brothers and step-brothers, continued to seed and harvest crops until the mid 1940’s. This entailed many trips between BC and Sask for Alvin for around 10 years. Alvin served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942-1946 and was stationed at the Number 8 Bombing and Gunnery in Lethbridge as an Air Frame Mechanic. He married Gloria Foss in 1944 at Creston, BC. After farming in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, he bought a section of land at Eagle Hill, west of Olds, Alberta. Al and Gloria had 7 children. Al enjoyed living in the Eagle Hill district and was involved with helping and supporting many community activities. His passions were farming, cattle, horses, reading, curling, travelling, listening to music, playing the banjo and spending time with family. After 57 years of farming at Eagle Hill, Al and Gloria moved to Mount View Lodge in January 2014. Al passed away peacefully with Gloria by his side on December 27, 2017 at the age of 99 years. Al is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Gloria; children Carol (Steve) Brown, Linda (Brian) O’Connell, Susan Gorrill, Elaine (Ian) Kaiser, Alan (Judy) Gorrill; 14 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; half-sister Eleanor Tompke; step-brother Harold (Betty) Foss; sisters-in-law Lily and Edna Foss; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son Wayne in 1958 and son David in 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds.
