Obituary for Marjorie Doris Vetter

VETTER
January 31, 1938 – November 30, 2017
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie (Marj) Doris Mason Vetter after a long illness. Marj died peacefully at the Olds Hospital on November 30, 2017 at the age of 79 years. She was born in Watrous, Saskatchewan, the eldest of 11 children. Her family moved often, as her father was in the Air Force, but Sunnyslope was the place she most thought of as home. In 1957, she married Robert (Bob) Edward Vetter. A few years later they moved to the farm between Sunnyslope and Allingham on the Kneehill Creek; a place which she had seen at the age of 14 and decided that the valley was so beautiful she would live there someday. She and Bob farmed there for over 40 years, until retiring to Olds. Marj was known to everyone, with her outgoing personality and talents opening many doors. She had a great appetite for life and knowledge and took on interesting jobs including municipal councillor, marriage commissioner, blackjack dealer, real estate agent, political cartoonist, farmer, store owner, but was primarily an artist, with her works purchased and displayed in numerous public buildings and private collections. Marj was very committed to the communities she lived in and volunteered for and donated to arts’ groups, drama clubs, sports teams, community associations, and political candidates. Besides painting she was a brilliant seamstress, a wonderful and creative quilter, a fabulous cook, an amazing gardener, an amateur citizen scientist and was constantly taking on new projects like jewelry-making. Everything she produced was original and had her special flair. She always had projects on the go, and was embroidering up until two days before her death. Her greatest talent was creating beauty wherever she was. She lived a full and interesting life, beautifying the farm, teaching her children, studying art, observing the natural world, nurturing musicians, and travelling. Marj is survived by her daughter Candice (Douglas Azar); sons Stephen and Daniel; her granddaughters Bronwyn, Kirsten, Annika and Stephanie; her sisters Wendy (Bryan Rudolph), Deborah and Terri; her brother Randy; her sisters and brothers-in-law Thelma Ohlhausen, Shirley and Charlie Whatley, and Faith and Mearl Falk; many nieces, nephews, friend and neighbours. She was predeceased by her husband Robert this past July; her daughters-in-law Catheryne and Sarah earlier this year; her parents Earl and Naomi (Griffiths) Mason; her brothers Brian Mason and a baby boy; her sisters Valerie Loxam, Carol Bach, Sharon Ryall, and Pamela Mason; and five nephews. Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 22 at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, 5241 46th St., Olds. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds Community Health Centre - Home Care Department or Olds Hospice, which were a great comfort to her.
