Obituary for Florence Eileen "Eileen" Shaw

SHAW

Florence Eileen Shaw (Eileen), late of Carstairs, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2017 at the age of 100 years and 13 days with her family by her side. Eileen was the youngest of three girls born to Arthur and Alice Weiss of Carstairs on November 12, 1917. In 1939, she married George Shaw of Carstairs and together they bought land and built a successful family farm just east of Carstairs. Their four kids were raised on their farm. Over the next 50 years the farm grew in size and focus. Eileen worked side-by side with George to plant and harvest crops and care for their livestock while their family was growing. Once they were semi-retired from farming and had more time, they golfed, bowled, square-danced and travelled. The farm was always close in her heart and her yard and gardens became a spectacular botanical delight for family, friends and neighbors. Besides being a gardener, Eileen was a musician. She was the organist in the Carstairs United Church for many years and was the pianist for many celebrations in the community. She was an avid bridge player and even recently, could beat the best at cribbage. Daily crossword puzzles were always solved before anyone else got to look at the newspaper. Eileen is survived by four children: Judy Shaw of Mundare, Ron (Debbie) Shaw of Calgary, Joanne (Tom) Golden of Lethbridge, and Marlene (Dennis) Bykowski of St. Albert; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; sister Alyce Francis and sister-in-law Hazel Shaw. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband George in 1988, her sister, Gladys Skocdopole from Botha in 2002, and her in-laws Alex and Betty Shaw, Frank Shaw, Ivan and Bessie Pointen, Reg Francis all of Carstairs, and Shorty Skocdopole of Botha. The family would like to express our genuine appreciation to the staff of the Bethany Care Centre (Didsbury) and the Chinook Winds Lodge (Carstairs) for their love, care and assistance for the past years she spent in your care. In keeping with mom’s wishes, there will be no funeral. If you wish, memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.heartlandfuneralservices.com.
