Obituary for James "Jim" Johnstone Maconochie

James "Jim" Johnstone Maconochie
James Johnstone Maconochie
May 4, 1920 – Aug 31, 2017

Reverend Jim Maconochie went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Aug 31, 2017 at the age of 97. Jim was born in 1920 to Bob and Annie Maconochie on the homestead in Beaver Flats, east of Rocky Mountain House. Life was not easy for Jim. Their family house was destroyed by fire when he was a child. His mother died when he was 12 years old and his father was killed in a farming accident when Jim was 18, so Jim and his younger brother had to take on the responsibility of running the farm. In 1944 Jim felt the Lord calling to him to full-time Christian service. He attended Mountain View Bible College from 1944-1948.
On July 22, 1953, Jim married Jean Burgess, a fellow classmate at Mountain View Bible College. The following years, they spent their lives serving in numerous Churches throughout Alberta. Jim and Jean were very dedicated to the Churches and the communities that they ministered in. Jim loved to visit and daily you would find him out in the community or local hospital, visiting or lending a hand where needed. Being active in the community, Jim served on numerous boards and as a school trustee for several years. Jim was very instrumental in the construction and development of James River Bible Camp, serving in different capacities over the years. Jim and Jean retired in 1985 and moved to Calgary. In May 1992, Jean passed away from a battle with cancer. In August, 1993, Jim married Ruth Eby of Didsbury. They enjoyed their years together travelling and visiting family and friends. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, of 24 years, daughter Beverley (Don) Montgomery of Blackfalds, AB, sons James (Valerie) Maconochie of Medicine Hat, AB, and Berwyn (Kathy) Maconochie of Rimbey, AB, grandchildren Kathy (Mike) Chu of Calgary, AB, Carlene (Mike) Wagner of Lacombe, AB, Logan and Emma Leigh Maconochie of Medicine Hat, AB, Scott, Randy and Katy Maconochie of Rimbey, AB, and great grandchildren Derek, Carter and Zane Wagner of Lacombe, AB. Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law Doris Maconochie of Rocky Mountain House, AB, his brother-in-law George Burgess of Chiliwack, BC, sister-in-law, Hazel Burgess of Medicine Hat, AB, and Marion Archer of Didsbury, AB. Jim is predeceased by his parents Bob and Annie Maconochie, his first wife Jean Maconochie, infant son Robert Maconochie and brother Ewart Maconochie. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Evangelical Missionary Church in Didsbury, AB. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Jim’s honor to Rivers Edge Camp, Box 39, Cremona, AB T0M 0R0.
