Obituary for Shirley Irene Unrau

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Shirley Irene Unrau on July 27, 2017 at the age of 77 years. She was born December 22, 1939 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan as Shirley Irene Irwin. After a short time in Saskatchewan the family moved to Collingwood, Ontario where she went to school and lived most of her childhood. Joining the military life took Shirley to many adventures throughout her life, included meeting and marrying Ben Berndt, where together they started a family of 3 boys. After a short while their journey took the family to Manitoba and then eventually to Penhold, Alberta where they settled in to raise their boys. Shirley started a new life purchasing a hair salon where she met and married Pat Unrau and they resided in Red Deer. They decided to move back to Morden, Manitoba where Pat's family home was. After his passing Shirley moved to Olds to be closer to her family and her grandchildren. Her generosity, kindness, and clear integrity gained her many lifetime friends all over the country She had mastered the science of loving and caring for animals especially her dogs. There are so many stories left to tell of Shirley’s adventures, her remarkable kind nature, and the love for her family and furry friends. She will be cherished forever. She is survived by his her sons Robert (Roxanne) Berndt their children Brett and Sabrina; Brian Berndt and his daughter Monica; Dan (Laura) Berndt and their daughter Mya; her brother Larry Irwin. She was predeceased by her parents Russell and Irene and mother-in-law Margaret. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday August 11, 2017 at Heartland Funeral Services Chapel, Olds. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the S.P.C A or the Kidney Foundation.
