BATEMAN
Alec Joseph Bateman of Olds passed away in Sundre on September 21, 2018 at 90 years of age after a long life, well lived. Alec was born in Innisfail on April 2, 1928 to Dave and Gertrude Bateman where they resided in the Big Bend area northwest of Innisfail. The family farmed in the Big Bend area until 1941 when the government purchased their land for what is now the Innisfail airport. The family of nine was then relocated to a farm in the Antler Hill, Niobe district between Innisfail and Penhold as their family size was the catalyst for the new Niobe School being constructed. While growing up, both Alec and his brother Isaac (Ike) joined the Innisfail detachment of the Reserve Squadron of the 14thArmy Calgary Tank Regiment. Alec met his wife Zinnia while working on a road crew near Vegreville in 1953 and they were married in January 1954. Together they raised four children in a loving home and were strong, stable and supportive parents. Alec and Zinnia resided in Sundre where Alec owned two Caterpillars and worked in road construction and the oilfield lease building and cleanup business. They were both avid curlers and were shareholders in the initial construction of the Sundre Curling Rink. In 1967, they moved to Olds as Alec had sold his Caterpillars to DBC Contractors and began work as their oilfield Superintendent. They continued to be avid curlers in Olds. Alec was a long time Lions Club member and both were long time loyal Legion Members. Alec was involved in bringing the Sherman tank, once used in battle in Israel and Syria, to rest on the front lawn of the Olds Royal Canadian Legion. Alec was also involved for many years with the Olds Agricultural Society and in 2006 received the Volunteer of the Year Award for his sponsorship procurement and expertise in ground preparation for the rodeo infield and racetrack. Alec was predeceased by Zinnia in March, 2014. He is survived by his daughters Lorraine (Lorne) Guthrie and Jacki (Ray) Blatz; sons Ken (Lorna) Bateman and Patrick (Nadene) Bateman; granddaughters Melissa (Rob) Munro, Kristin (Cam) McIntosh, Jenna (Michael) Khan, Jennifer (Shylo) Harvey, Sydney Blatz, Kelly Bateman, Taylor Bateman, Ryan Bateman and Zoe Bateman; grandsons Dakota Blatz and Michael Blatz, great-granddaughters Hailey and Abby Munro, Makenna McIntosh, Isabella and Aliyah Khan, Stevie Harvey, great-grandsons Cashis Harvey and Brexten Mcintosh; sisters, Dorothy (Delbert) Calvert, Gwen (George) Connon, Ruth (Howard) Rutley and brother Art (Marie) Bateman. He was predeceased by sister Lillian (Darrell) Berghaus, brothers Isaac (Esther) Bateman, Glen Bateman and Robert Bateman. Funeral Service will be held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Olds at 1pm on Saturday, October 20th, 2018. Immediately following the funeral, a private family interment will be held at the Olds Cemetery. Guests are invited to a luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion in Olds following the funeral service. As Alec was always seen in his favorite cowboy shirts, the family asks that those who wish, dress in their favorite cowboy attire.
