Obituary for John McDonald Sloan

SLOAN
John McDonald Sloan, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 19, 2018 at the age of 75 years. He was born September 13, 1942 during the war years in Corby, Northamptonshire, England where he resided across the tracks from the biggest steel works in Britain. After the war they moved to a nicer neighbourhood, no longer having to go down the garden to the bomb shelter in the night. He did well in Corby Grammar School then worked as a bank teller where he made many lifelong friends. Susan Hutchinson, from Canada, was visiting family and was introduced to John by her cousin and they began dating. They were engaged and came to Calgary by boat, train and bus to be married in 1968 in Calgary when it became clear he was accepted and welcomed by Susan's family. John's first job in Canada was an appraiser trainee at Canada Permanent Trust, doubling his previous salary. It took him 9 years to earn his AACI accreditation, something a lawyer questioned on the stand but he explained that he had to take a year off when his dad died and his mum moved to Calgary but otherwise a normal to quick amount of time to get accreditation. They liked to travel to cities in Canada for appraisal conventions and for holidays in the Caribbean, England, Vancouver Island and near Maricopa near Phoenix. John loved his 6 dogs who produced 13 puppies. He was a big man with a soft heart. He loved music, went to numerous concerts and loved to socialize over coffee, drinks and good food. He was a positive man; a cheerful optimist. To his family he was a rock, in the best possible sense, caring and available when needed. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds & District Hospice Society.
