Obituary for John "Jack" Ross Humphries

John "Jack" Ross Humphries
HUMPHRIES

John (Jack) Ross Humphries was born July 26, 1942 in Calgary, Alberta. He passed away on April 14, 2018 in Olds, Alberta, due to complications resulting from his 70 years of living with diabetes, a condition which he never allowed to get in the way of living his life to the fullest and which he always faced with a positive outlook. Jack was the oldest child of John (Jack) and Henrietta (Hetty) Humphries. He had three siblings Adele, Craig, and Mary. He spent his early years on the farm south-west of Drumheller, Alberta, where his time was filled with many adventures and hard work. He attended school in Drumheller until he moved to Calgary to complete his final year of High School. It was at that time that he met Shirley Blower. They became good friends and were often found in one another's company. They were engaged and married in 1965. Two children soon followed – Brett in 1966 and Cheri in 1967. They lived for a short time in both Calgary and Rocky Mountain House before making Olds their final home in 1972. Jack and Shirley owned a small business, the House of Shoes, from 1974 to 1983. Following this he worked at several different jobs including real estate, snow removal/lawn care, home repairs/painting, gas station, Value Drug Mart, and finally financial adviser. He loved being involved in the community and volunteered with many different clubs and organizations. He was involved with the Olds Optimists Club, Scouts Canada, Kiwanis Club of Olds, Olds Search and Rescue, and the Central Alberta Amateur Radio Club. Some of his best friends and relationships were found in these groups. In recognition of his service he was named Citizen of the Year in Olds in 2003. He was also actively involved with church callings having been involved with the youth, Sunday School and Priesthood organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Jack enjoyed the outdoors and had many fond memories of times spent camping, hunting, and fishing with friends and family throughout the years. His family was very important to him and he tried to attend as many of their important events as possible. Jack is predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley, his parents John and Henrietta, his brother Craig, father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Myfanwy, and sister-in-law, Dianne. He is survived by his children, Brett Humphries, Cheri (Bruce) Woodruff; grandchildren Jonathan (Jessica) Humphries, Ashley Humphries, Kimberley Humphries, Nicholas Woodruff, Nathaniel Woodruff, and Mairin Woodruff; step-father Mervin (Kay) Clark; sisters Adele Meyers and Mary Murphy; sister-in-law Linda Tomlinson, and brother-in-law Klaas Heerema; as well as many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made in his honour to the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). Funeral Service will be held, April 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (3802-57 Ave), Olds.
