Obituary for Mary Brown

Mary Brown
Mary Brown passed away peacefully in the Didsbury Hospital on February 16, 2018 at the age of 93 years. She was born June 25, 1924 in Friedensruh, Southern Ukraine, Russia to Johann and Helen Wiebe. In 1926, her family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Burns Ranch area east of Didsbury. She was an outstanding student and attended school at Mona and Neapolis Schools through grade 11. Mary was baptized in her teens and became a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church. In 1945, she married Henry Brown. Together they lived, farmed and raised their family in the Neapolis district. Dairy was their main operation, but Mary always raised and loved chickens. In 2002, they moved into a new bungalow that they had built in Didsbury and later into Aspen Ridge Lodge. Mary was involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher, and part of the sewing circle including leadership. She loved cooking at Camp Valaqua in its early days, with a wood stove outdoors, and developed a lifelong commitment to the camp program. As well, she was involved in the Midway Home and School Association. She is survived by her three children: Ron (Lorna) Brown of Olds, Vern (Eric) Olfert of Saskatoon, SK and Harvey (Eleanor) Brown of Summerland, BC, (we’re not buying their wine right now); ten grandchildren, and twenty three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Johann and Helen Wiebe; three sisters Helen Penner, Ann Helps, Louise Remmel; three brothers, John, Jake and George. Although we are sad to bid her farewell we know that she lived a long and meaningful life; that her love was broad and strong, and unconditional; and that she is with God.
