Condolences

Condolence From: Lourdes Trudgeon
Condolence: I will always treasure the memories I have from Betty and her family. She along with Bill and the children made me feel so welcomed and loved when I came to Canada to start a new chapter in my life. She took me under her wing and shared her home and taught me many things unknown to a city girl. Her Sunday meals were out of this world, Christmas and other festivities were warm and full of love. Her laughter still rings in my ears. She was a wonderful lady. My love and heartfelt thoughts goes to the family.

Condolence From: Janet Gibson
Condolence: Betty Calder was my father Don Gibson’s first cousin. She was the daughter of Walter Gibson and he was the son of Walter’s brother Jack. My father and mother Jean often travelled in the summer to visit Betty and her extended family on the farm in Innisfail. As Betty’s son Bruce says, Betty, Don and Jean were cut from the same cloth. They loved people and were kind and generous.
Walter and Jack were two of five boys born to Robert Gibson and Jennie Heron. Jack was the oldest and Walter, the fourth. After Jennie died at the age of 37, three of the boys, including Walter, moved to western Canada and Jack and the youngest, Donald, moved to Toronto.
My brother Peter and I attended two family reunions that gathered together the five brothers’ extended family in Innisfail.
I remember meeting Betty at my father and mother’s home in Etobicoke and later in Innisfail. She was friendly and fearless.
Betty was born near Olds, Alberta in 1926 and worked in a hardware store until she married Bill Calder in 1946. They had three children – Clara, Catherine and Bruce. Sadly, Clara died after she and her horse were struck by lightning. Betty volunteered in a 4H clothing club and she and Bill enjoyed hosting many family gatherings.
I received an email on Dec. 17, 2016 from Betty. She told me she’d just celebrated her 90th birthday with her family including her five brothers and sisters. I'll remember Betty as one of the greatest Canadians.
Until we meet again.
