Obituary for Carl Wilmer Lewis

Carl Wilmer Lewis
LEWIS
Carl Wilmer Lewis was born in Algoma Oregon, February 4, 1927 to Lillie and George Lewis. The middle of three brothers, Carl spent a busy and interesting childhood growing up on a small farm near Klamath Falls, Oregon. A farm background gave Carl a keenly honed curiosity, an appreciation for the natural world, and an ability to adapt to hardship with grace. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Carl studied civil engineering, which to him was more than just an interesting job: it was a discipline which he practiced with pride, taking on each bridge, road or building project with enthusiasm. He met and married Mildred Johnson in 1948; together they raised three children, beginning their journey in California and then Washington state. In 1968, the family moved to Grand Forks, British Columbia, Carl seeing an opportunity to give his wife and children all the advantages and adventure a life in Canada would bring. Carl and Mildred proudly took oaths of Canadian citizenship in Fernie, B.C. in 1975. Many more moves followed, but always never too far from his children and their families, as family was, and remained all his days, Carl's first love, his pride and his true joy. He was utterly devoted to Mildred, and his children, to his faith, and to his unshakable perseverance in giving his family the best life he could. He passed away, peacefully, in Olds hospital with his family nearby on August 21, 2016. Carl is survived by Mildred, his wife of 68 years, his sons, George (Joanne), James (Theresa), and daughter Lori (Eugene), as well as many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived as well by his two brothers, Lonnie and Danny Lewis, and other family members living in the U.S. Also left behind are neighbors and the friends he made wherever he went. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, an inventive and accomplished storyteller, a good neighbor, and a lover of knowledge and learning. Funeral services were held on Tuesday August 30, 2016 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Olds with Pastor John Lentz officiating. Interment followed in the Olds Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance.
