Obituary for Harold Neil "Neil" Olsen

HAROLD NEIL OLSEN
Neil was born in Wytlaw, AB on March 8, 1931. He was raised by Isabel &
Magnus Olsen, Magnus was also referred to as Big Mack with a big team. He was known for the team of large work horses that he used to pull the grain wagon during his time in the Squaw Valley area. Neil was raised with his 3 brothers, Glen, Lyall and Dale; Neil being the 3rd born. They all worked together raising cattle and grain farming. Milking cows was a substantial part of their income as well. They delivered milk to the Wytlaw village once a day. Neil worked at his Uncle Bill’s farm machinery shop as a mechanic for a 4 year period. He also acquired his class 1 license which he used to deliver equipment to local farms. This license was essential to begin his way in the world driving trucks. He started out as a truck driver for Schlumberger in the mid 50’s in south east Saskatchewan area then continued on to the Finning trucking company. He hauled drilling pipe in the Peace River area, which he talked about a fair bit in his last month visiting with Erik. (He loved the trucks!!). He always had a keen eye to spot them and shared his stories about the trucks with passion. These fascinating stories continued with Erik in the last few rides they took together on outings from the hospital. The later 50’s, Dale & Neil worked in North Dakota with cousin Abner in a grain cleaning venture. This later brought Neil to the Brandon area where he soon met Gwen. Neil’s shop was just a few blocks away from Gwen’s coffee shop, which he frequented often. Soon after they married, they started a family and had three boys, Magnus, Lars and Erik. Magnus and Lars were both born in Brandon, Manitoba and Erik in Calgary, Alberta. Neil purchased a Mack truck and continued truck driving in Calgary, hauling various materials including fuel and drilling rigs up to the north country. After a knock on the door from Llloyd Smigerowsky and some prompting from Gwen, Neil switched careers taking over the sales of Electrolux vacuums in the Olds area. This is what brought Neil & his family to Olds. After a successful career with Electrolux Neil ventured into tractor sales with Case under the ownership of Al Graham. Later Neil moved to Red Deer and began the taxi company called Alberta Gold which is still under operation today. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Funeral services were held on Friday November 6, 2015 at Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds with Richard Pahl officiating. Interment followed in the Alto Reste Cemetery, Red Deer. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds & District Hospice Society. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-507-8610 www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
