Obituary for Margaret Anne Johnston (Petersen)

Margaret Anne Johnston (Petersen)
Margaret Anne Johnston passed away on August 8, 2014 in Didsbury at the age of 70 years. Margaret was born September 1, 1943 to Nels and Jessie Petersen. She was raised on the family farm at Harmattan and attended the Harmattan School and Sundre High School. She graduated in 1961 and went on to the Calgary General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1964. Margaret married Jack Johnson in 1965 and together they had two children Ivy and Donald. They raised Pinto horses and were active in both the Pinto Horse Association and the Didsbury Light Horse Association. Following her separation she moved to her farm west of Didsbury where she resided for the rest of her life. Margaret had an active nursing career at the Didsbury Hospital for 25 years, after which she had a foot care private practice for another 20 years. She remained active in the Light Horse Association and received an award for 50 years of service in 2013. Margaret was instrumental in the development of the Mountain View Special Riding Association and remained active with it for several years. She was an approved steward for the Canadian Equestrian Federation. She enjoyed showing and trail riding for many years, especially with her favourite gelding “Runner”. When her knees became too painful to ride she took up travelling and enjoyed trips to Reno, Laughlin, Las Vegas, Washington state, Branson Missouri, New Zealand and Australia – often with her good friend Bette. Margaret especially enjoyed her trips to the Peace River country to visit her grandchildren Heather and Marie; she was also pleased to meet both her great grandchildren Tatum and Chloe. Her adventures and the lives of her children and grandchildren were chronicled in the many scrapbooks she enjoyed putting together. She spent many enjoyable hours tending her flower beds, trees and vegetable garden. In the spring of 2014, Margaret was very pleased to attend her 50 year nursing graduation reunion. Margaret was predeceased by her parents and special friend John Buchanan. She is survived by her daughter Ivy (Carl); her son Donald; granddaughters Heather (Mike) and Marie (Quinn); and great grandchildren Tatum and Chloe. She is also survived by her brother Bob (Morganne) and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life was held at the Melvin Hall, west of Didsbury, Alberta, on August 14, 2014. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made directly to the Mountain View Special Riding Association (5629 – 49 Ave., Olds, AB T4H 1G5).
